How to Apply

Domestic Students

Australian and New Zealand citizens, Australian permanent residents and holders of Permanent Humanitarian Visas apply for undergraduate courses at the University of Melbourne through the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC).

All applicants should carefully read the 2010 VTAC Guide before applying in order to understand the course requirements and application procedures. The 2010 VTAC Guide will be available in late July from major news agencies throughout Australia. For more information including the closing date for applications visit the VTAC website.

International Students

An international student is any student who is not an Australian or New Zealand citizen, or who is not an Australian permanent resident or holder of a Permanent Humanitarian Visa.

International students currently studying the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE), International Baccalaureate (IB) or other Year 12 programs in Australia should apply through the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC). Visit the VTAC website.

All other international students should apply directly to the University of Melbourne. Online application information for international students can be found at the university Future Students website.

Alternatively, you can use the application form included in the 2010 Undergraduate Prospectus for International Students; or provided to you by one of the University’s overseas representatives.To view the contact details of the University’s representatives in your country visit the university Overseas Representatives webpage.

The closing dates for direct applications from international students is 20 December for commencement in Semester 1 (March).

Access Melbourne - Special Entry Access Scheme

Access Melbourne is the University’s combined special entry and access scholarships scheme for Australian students. Twenty percent of the University’s new undergraduate Commonwealth supported places will be offered to students who have applied through Access Melbourne. In addition, many of these students will be awarded a Melbourne Access Scholarship. Applying through Access Melbourne can enhance your chance for selection into a course. Non-school Leaver Entry Pathway

If you have not met the standard entry requirements you may be eligible to apply for a entry into the course using the non-school leaver entry pathway. To be eligible for this pathway you will need to meet the following:

  • be 23 years or older by September of the year preceding admission;
  • be an Australian or New Zealand citizen or Australian permanent resident or holder of a permanent Humanitarian Visa; and
  • have no qualifications from the past seven years which could be used as a basis for entry.

In addition, all applicants will be required to:

Applicants may be required to undertake subsequent studies via the University Community Access Program to meet prerequisites or complement their results in the general aptitude test. The Community Access Program offers the opportunity to study single subjects at the University of Melbourne on a non-degree basis.

Currently enrolled University of Melbourne students

All domesic students (Australian and New Zealand citizens, Australian permanent residents and holders of Permanent Humanitarian Visas) wanting to apply for a transfer to another University of Melbourne course must do so via the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC). For full details, please refer to the to Future students website. Please note International students are required to apply directly to the University.

Before you apply please ensure you meet the subject pre-requisite requirements.

Please ensure that you submit a re-enrolment plan in your current course even if you believe you are likely to be offered a place in the Bachelor of Biomedicine. If you are unsuccessful in your application and have failed to course plan for your current course you could be faced with a large fine to re-enrol, or lose your place all together.

 

Guaranteed Pathways to Graduate Professional Degrees for School Leavers

Standards have been set for high-achieving Year 12 students, which, if met at the completion of an undergraduate degree at the University of Melbourne, will guarantee a place in a graduate professional degree.

Students who meet the prerequisite requirements for entry into a graduate professional degree will be guaranteed entry to their course of choice if they meet the following criteria.

For a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP):

  • achieve an ENTER (or equivalent) of 99.9 (achieved in the final year of schooling in Australia by 2010);
  • commence an undergraduate degree at the University of Melbourne following completion of schooling;
  • complete the undergraduate course with a H2A (75%) weighted average.

(graduate selection into Medicine, Dental Science, and Physiotherapy is also subject to satisfactory performance at an interview to demonstrate adequate communication skills)

Students striving for a fee place (Australian or International)*:

  • achieve an ENTER (or equivalent) of 99.0 (achieved in the final year of schooling in Australia by 2010);
  • commence an undergraduate course at the University of Melbourne following completion of schooling; and
  • complete the undergraduate course with a H2A (75%) weighted average.
(graduate selection into Medicine, Dental Science, and Physiotherapy is also subject to satisfactory performance at an interview to demonstrate adequate communication skills)
*Guaranteed places in specific professional entry degrees (including Medicine, Dental Science, Physiotherapy, Optometry, Vetinary Science) will be limited by the number of fee places available in the course in the year of entry.

For the Master of Engineering

For a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP):

  • achieve an ENTER (or equivalent) of 95.0 (achieved in final year of schooling in Australia);
  • commence an appropriate undergraduate degree at the University of Melbourne following completion of schooling; and
  • complete the undergraduate course with a 65% (H3) weighted average in the final two years.

For a fee place (Australian or International):

  • commence an appropriate undergraduate degree at the University of Melbourne following completion of schooling; and
  • complete the undergraduate course with a 65% (H3) weighted average in the final two years.

Applications for a graduate professional degree using this pathway will be made in the final year of undergraduate study. It is not necessary for students to nominate their intention to pursue this pathway before then.

Mid-year Entry - Not Available in 2009

The Bachelor of Biomedicine will not have a mid-year entry. Students who wish to apply for advanced standing or credit need to be aware that credit for 3rd year level core subjects, is not available until 2010.
